Krate Stretford Mall is one of the most creative redevelopments in Greater Manchester, a collection of independent food, drink and arts units built from repurposed shipping containers around the old mall’s square. What could have been another retail space is now a small cultural village where traders, artists and audiences mix easily.
Krate hosts pop up exhibitions, DJ sets, open mic nights and makers’ markets that showcase Trafford’s creative talent. There’s often live acoustic music spilling into the courtyard, alongside street food from around the world. Independent shops sell handmade crafts, vinyl and prints by local designers.
The energy is young, friendly and inclusive. Regular community events include poetry slams, art trails and craft clubs for families. LGBTQ+ creatives are part of the regular rotation of traders and performers, and the environment is openly welcoming, casual, colourful and community driven.
With fairy lights overhead, outdoor seating and locally brewed beer on tap, Krate feels more like a neighbourhood festival than a shopping space. It’s a sign of Trafford’s changing cultural landscape, grassroots, sustainable and built around people rather than profit.
