The Garrick Playhouse

A historic volunteer run theatre bringing quality drama and musicals to Altrincham since 1914.

Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is a cornerstone of Trafford’s cultural life. Founded more than a century ago, this volunteer run theatre has earned a reputation for excellence, community spirit and accessibility. Its art deco frontage and welcoming foyer reflect its mix of history and heart, grand but never pretentious.

The Garrick stages around a dozen shows each year, covering everything from Shakespeare and Sondheim to contemporary drama and local new writing. The theatre is known for nurturing emerging talent and encouraging people of all backgrounds to get involved, both on stage and behind the scenes. The vibe is proudly community first, with volunteers handling everything from lighting design to wardrobe.

Inclusivity is woven through its ethos. Productions often explore social themes, love, identity, belonging, and it has hosted LGBTQ+ themed plays like “La Cage aux Folles”, “The Laramie Project” and “Beautiful Thing”. The Playhouse also collaborates with schools, youth groups and local charities to make the arts accessible to everyone in Trafford.

Its on site bar and cafe add to the welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a pre show chat or post show debate. The audience feels like a family, locals, students and regulars who have been coming for decades.

The Garrick’s staying power comes from its sense of purpose, theatre made by and for the community. It proves that culture isn’t about size or budget, it’s about heart, connection and care.
