Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, tucked above the town’s library, is one of Tameside’s quiet treasures. Founded in 1932, it combines historic fine art with modern exhibitions and community programming that highlight creativity across Greater Manchester.
The gallery’s permanent collection includes nineteenth and twentieth century British paintings, alongside rotating shows from local and regional artists. Recent exhibitions have explored themes of identity, representation and belonging, with contributions from LGBTQ+ artists, young illustrators and community photographers.
Staff make a real effort to ensure accessibility and inclusivity. Family drop-in art sessions, creative writing workshops and Meet the Artist talks are all free, helping the gallery feel open and approachable.
It’s small but deeply atmospheric, sunlit rooms, friendly staff and a peaceful energy that encourages visitors to linger. The gallery proves that great art doesn’t have to be behind a ticket barrier, it can be right on your high street, full of local pride.
