The Whitworth

A gallery in the park that redefines what an art space can be, open, inclusive and rooted in Manchester's community.

The Whitworth, part of The University of Manchester, sits proudly among the trees of Whitworth Park and has become one of the city’s most loved art spaces. It’s not just a gallery, it’s a meeting place where creativity, wellbeing and social change meet. With its light filled cafe looking out across the park, The Whitworth feels less like a traditional gallery and more like a living, breathing part of Manchester.

The gallery has long been at the forefront of championing underrepresented voices, with a genuine commitment to diversity in all its forms. LGBTQ+ themes often run through its exhibitions, from “Joy Forever: Queer Resistance and Resilience”, which explored queer activism through art, to “Queering the Whitworth”, a series of events and commissions led by local LGBTQ+ artists. It regularly works with partners such as Contact Theatre, LGBT Foundation and Manchester Pride, hosting performances, workshops and discussions that bring communities together.

The cafe serves great coffee, homemade cakes and a relaxed brunch menu, with vegan and vegetarian choices that make it a favourite among students and locals. On a sunny day, visitors spill out onto the terrace or lawns with their food, while the park hosts creative sessions, sculpture installations and family days.

What sets The Whitworth apart is its open hearted approach. Whether you’re there for an exhibition, a quiet moment in the garden or a Pride picnic, the space feels welcoming and real. It’s Manchester at its best, forward thinking, inclusive and full of life.
