The Merseyway Workshop is a bright, hands-on creative space hidden in plain sight inside Stockport’s shopping centre. What started as a small repair and recycling initiative has grown into one of the town’s most vibrant community arts hubs, a place where people come together to make, fix and learn.
Workshops cover everything from woodworking and sewing to screen printing and furniture restoration. The space champions sustainability, creativity and inclusion, it’s a safe, welcoming environment for everyone, whether you’re a total beginner or a skilled maker looking to share your craft.
Local queer and trans creatives are a visible part of the Workshop’s community. Collaborative projects have included Pride flag upcycling sessions, LGBTQ+ zine-making, and exhibitions highlighting eco-activism in the queer community. Events like Make and Mend Mondays and Creative Fridays encourage people to drop in, grab a brew and chat while working on shared projects.
There’s free tea and coffee, plenty of laughter, and the sense that creativity here is about connection as much as craft. It’s the kind of space that reminds you culture doesn’t just happen on a stage, it happens around a table, glue gun in hand, with everyone welcome.
