The Curtain Theatre is one of the oldest surviving amateur theatres in the North, tucked just off Milkstone Road. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in atmosphere — that old-fashioned magic when the lights dim and the curtain rises. Volunteers do it all, from directing to front-of-house, and their pride shows in every detail. The programme mixes classic plays, contemporary drama and the occasional musical or festival slot. It’s a social place too, with interval drinks, raffles, and plenty of laughter shared across generations. Accessibility is improving thanks to local fundraising, and the group welcomes new members from all walks — including LGBTQ+ performers and audiences who want an inclusive creative outlet. It’s a slice of Rochdale heritage still thriving thanks to passion and good humour.
