Edge Lane Theatre, Manchester M21 9JG Trafford

The Chorlton Players, based at Edge Lane Theatre, sit right on Trafford’s border and embody the neighbourly creativity of the area. This long running amateur group has been entertaining South Manchester for decades with lively performances that blend community warmth, humour and heart.

Their repertoire ranges from classic plays and original comedies to their famously funny pantomimes, which sell out every year. What sets the Players apart is their inclusivity, open auditions, affordable tickets and a genuine welcome for newcomers regardless of experience, background or identity. Many LGBTQ+ members have found friendship and confidence here, both on and off stage.

The theatre space itself is small but brimming with character, fairy lights, homemade sets and an audience that feels part of the show. There’s usually tea and biscuits at the interval, and laughter fills the foyer.

The group also runs writing workshops, acting classes and collaborative projects with other community arts groups across Trafford and Chorlton. It’s theatre for the joy of it, made by people who care about creativity and connection.

Edge Lane Theatre might not have the grandeur of a city venue, but that’s exactly its charm. It’s home grown, heartfelt and a reminder that local theatre is one of Greater Manchester’s great quiet joys.
