Castlefield Gallery has been quietly shaping Manchester’s visual arts scene for over forty years. Founded in 1984 by a group of artists determined to make space for experimental work, it remains true to that grassroots spirit, open, risk taking and community minded. Located near Deansgate, the gallery is light, modern and welcoming, with exhibitions that explore identity, politics and social change.
Its programming consistently champions diversity, often foregrounding LGBTQ+ artists and themes. Shows such as “Beyond Binary”, “Queer Contemporaries”, and “Soft Bodies” have tackled gender, sexuality and the politics of visibility, while its artist residencies have supported emerging queer artists from across the North West.
The gallery also runs public events, talks, screenings and workshops, where audiences and artists meet on equal footing. Collaborations with PINK Manchester, Short Supply and Queer Contact ensure the gallery remains embedded in the local queer creative network.
There’s a small shop selling zines, prints and artist books, and a nearby cafe often filled with the same faces you see at the exhibitions. The team’s warmth and commitment to inclusivity make it a space that feels truly Mancunian, real, open and proudly progressive.
Castlefield Gallery isn’t about elitism or trend chasing, it’s about people and stories. It reminds us that art, when shared with care and courage, can change how a city sees itself.
