Event essentials
This exhibition centres queer joy as a form of resistance and memory. Curated by and for our community,
50 Years of Queer Hope & Joy gathers posters, placards, zines, letters and ephemera from five decades of
LGBTQ+ organising in Greater Manchester. For visitors, it’s an affirming walk through our own history:
a reminder that mutual aid, chosen family and collective action are the backbone of our city’s queer life.
The show honours campaigners who fought for HIV treatment access, safer nightlife and trans healthcare, while
also spotlighting everyday tenderness—birthday cards from youth groups, scribbled notes from helpline volunteers,
and snapshots from Pride marches long before corporate floats. The curatorial voice is unapologetically queer,
accessible, and intergenerational: audio memories sit alongside protest banners; a reading nook features back issues
of OutNorthWest; and interactive prompts invite us to imagine the next 50 years of queer Manchester.
This is a place to bring elders and young people together, to feel seen, and to leave with fresh resolve.
It’s free, centrally located, and ideal for schools, community groups and culture vultures who want to understand
why LGBTQ+ culture here has always meant care, creativity and courage.
