Every spring, the streets and backrooms of Chapel Street transform into a playground of creativity for Sounds from the Other City. This annual festival has grown from a DIY experiment into one of Greater Manchester’s most loved cultural events, celebrating the independent spirit of Salford with an inclusive, queer friendly heart.
The festival takes over pubs, churches, warehouses and cafes across the area, filling them with live music, poetry, drag and visual art. The atmosphere is joyful chaos, you might stumble from a punk gig at The Kings Arms into a queer cabaret at a collective space, then catch an art installation in a car park. The festival champions local talent, especially LGBTQ+ and marginalised artists, with line ups curated by independent collectives.
The organisers prioritise accessibility, community involvement and fair pay for artists, and the crowd reflects Salford’s character, friendly, diverse and full of humour. Even the food stalls and bars showcase local producers and queer owned businesses.
